Toledo Haunted Occurrences Research's Phases of Activity
1)Lead Active- Early stage of activity. Events are subtle in nature but considered out of the norm or difficult to explain.

At this stage the events can be ignored, overlooked or explained by an overactive imagination. This stage is often experienced by            individuals upon moving into a new home. Feelings of being watched or unusually high levels of anxiety. Individuals can place an object in a particular location only to find it missing upon return. The individuals will usually convince themselves that they had mistakenly left the object in the location in which it is later found. People at this stage may find themselves unexplainably waking up at night or experiencing strange, often repeating dreams. On rare occasions these dreams may be experienced by multiple members of the house. Strange lights or shadows may appear in their peripheral vision which they may take notice of temporarily only to quickly dismiss them. Smells may be present in which the source cannot be found. Often animals present in the environment will begin to exhibit strange behavior.
Exception to the above would be in instances in which a Poltergeist phenomena may be present which contrary to popular opinion is not caused by an entity but is manifested and is dependent on a particular individual or "agent". This phenomenon usually primarily impacts physical objects and is usually temporary. These telekinetic or psychokinetic bursts can be quite volatile and sudden. Occasionally strange sounds or the sense of tactile contact can be associated with this phenomena but it is not common.

2)Active- At this stage events are noticeable and there is a measurable energy or presence beyond natural explanation.

Level 2 activity is harder to dismiss and now the individuals present more frequently investigate the disturbances rather than ignoring them or blaming the imagination. Anxiety levels can now become troubling. Objects can disappear for days or weeks and reappear in an impossible or improbable location. Waking up in the night at this stage usually is accompanied by fleeting glimpses of shadows or strange lights. Witnesses even report seeing human like figures or shapes which appear to vanish or depart the area when the individual reaches a more awakened state. The strange lights or shadows mentioned in the Lead Active stage are now more pronounced and may occur within the direct line of vision. It is at this stage that full or partial torso entities may appear. It is important to note that at this stage much of the phenomena related to figure like shadows or human like entities may be centered around one individual, especially in the early stages. There are documented cases of single individuals observing entities despite the presence of multiple individuals who claim to not be able to observe the phenomena. Animals are now noticeably agitated by the activity and may refuse to enter certain rooms, gaze an isolated spot on the wall or ceiling as if something has captured their attention or growl or hiss at an unseen presence. Electronic devices will act erratically; most noticeably running to the point of failure due to an unexplained energy surge. The presence of strange energy fields are commonly reported at the Active Stage. This fields could be creating the reports of anxiety from certain eyewitnesses as these fields disrupt our own magnetic field.
NOTE: Here's and easy and interesting experiment that relates to this concept. Turn your back to someone and close your eyes. Now have that person slowly move his hand towards you or into your energy field(within about a foot or so). See how often you can sense his hand moving into your field.
There may be high static charges present. Certain rooms may have a feeling of heaviness or an uncomfortable feeling of pressure in them. Voices can he heard however they are often in the form of a whisper and can be difficult to understand. These voices will often be difficult to isolate within our three dimensional space. They may appear to come from everywhere and........nowhere. Footfalls from other areas of the environment are often heard. These footfalls, if traced will often seem to continue despite the presence of walls and other obstacles that should impede their progress. They will also have a certain characteristic about them that can possibly aid in identifying the source. A thud as if created by a boot. A tap as if created by a high heel or dress shoe. We have to ask ourselves if in the case of footfalls if we are hearing the creation of a sound due to the weight of a physical mass or our we perceiving these sounds through a type of communication we still don't completely understand.
At this stage is when a paranormal investigating team will be consulted. This team should understand and be aware of these dynamics in regards to possible paranormal activity and be able to investigate these areas from a knowledgeable perspective. Paranormal investigating is about understanding the dynamics between the environment, the mind and the possibility that what is happening defies rational explanation.

3)Lead Dormant- Activity frequency is declining and/or becoming more subtle yet energy or presence continues to make itself known on some level. This stage leads back to Dormant stage.

Normalcy is returning to individuals lives. Some experiences are still reported at this level. The activity is akin to aftershocks following seismic activity. Lead Dormant is a gradual decline in the phenomenon due in large part to beginning activities defined in stage four or Dormant.
In regards to Poltergeist activity. Individual recognizes he or she is supplying the kinetic energy required to manifest the phenomena.
"A better understanding of these cases should lead to a deeper understanding of the human psyche and, perhaps most importantly, it's complex relationship with our physical surroundings."

4)Dormant- No activity preceded by a period when the events are in decline know as Lead Dormant.

Stage four is commonly the result of three factors. One, the activity has spent it's energy requirements. The thought is that the energy field that supports the phenomenon builds over time like inflating a balloon. What happens once that balloon reaches failure? It pops. The same concept applies here. The energy(we're not sure what energy that is at this point) builds over time. It may be a day, a week, a year and so on. Once it reaches a failure point or possibly an event horizon(a boundary in space time), that energy build up releases and the paranormal event occurs.  Second possibility. It is an Echo or residual. In this case the phenomena has a shelf life so to speak. Once the trauma that supplied the energy to stamp our space time with a bookmark of the event that initially created it has run it's course it ceases to be active. Third possibility. The activity has ceased to do a disruption of some sort in the environmental or spiritual support mechanism that it depends on for it's existence. This includes all scientific, spiritual and religious aspects of possible solutions to paranormal activity.
